What's Walkable from Whiskey Ridge
One of the things that makes Whiskey Ridge genuinely special is how much is right outside your door. Most guests never realize what's within a short walk until they start exploring. The free city bus stop is also right here and connects you to downtown at no cost.
🚌 Free City Bus — Steamboat Springs Transit (SST)
The free SST bus stops right near the property and runs continuous loops between the mountain village and downtown Steamboat all day. No car needed for getting around town. Real-time tracking via the RouteShout app or Google Maps. steamboatsprings.net/transit

The legendary apres bar in the old Ski Patrol hut at the base of the mountain. Ski season only. Young, crazy, fun local energy, where Steamboat locals celebrate a great powder day. Creative drinks, surprisingly excellent food, outdoor picnic tables, mountain views. A "5-star dive bar" by its own admission.
🌎 Wildlife Safety — Bears & Elk in Steamboat
Black bears and elk are active throughout the Steamboat Springs area, including neighborhoods near the mountain. Bears are most active spring through fall, and elk can be seen year-round. A few important reminders: never leave food, trash, or anything scented outside or in an unlocked car. If you encounter a bear, stay calm, back away slowly, and make yourself appear large. Do not run. Elk are large and unpredictable, especially cows with calves in spring and bulls during the fall rut. Give them wide berth and never approach them on foot. Enjoy watching them from a distance, they are one of the great gifts of being here.
Steamboat Ski Resort
❄ Winter — Champagne Powder
Steamboat is famous for its ultra-light, dry Champagne Powder snow. Over 165 trails across 2,900+ acres, 18 lifts, and a vertical drop of 3,668 feet. World-class terrain for every level. The gondola base is about a 10 minute walk from Whiskey Ridge.
🌿 Summer — The Mountain Opens Up
When the snow melts, Steamboat Resort transforms into a mountain biking, hiking, and scenic gondola destination. Ride the gondola up for the views alone, hike up under the gondola and have a beer at Hazie's at the top, then ride the gondola back down. A completely different and equally spectacular experience.
Steamboat Ski Resort — The Gondola is a 10-Minute Walk
Whiskey Ridge is within easy walking distance of the gondola base, but is not ski-in/ski-out. During ski season, the Retreatia shuttle also runs a loop from the garage entrance. A QR code in the unit lets you track and reserve shuttles. In summer, ride the gondola up for the views, or hike up under it and ride it back down after a beer at Hazie's at the top, one of the great Steamboat summer experiences. 2305 Mt Werner Cir

In the heart of Gondola Square for 39 years. Two full bars, nine TVs, American pub food, and happy hour 3–5pm. Famous for the "powder clause," which offers discounts on bloody marys on big snow days. A genuine Steamboat base-area institution loved by locals and ski patrollers alike. Winter hours 10:30am–6pm.
The Range at Steamboat Resort
Four dining options plus a coffee bar under one roof right at the gondola base: Sunshine Bowl Ramen, Pioneer Pie (pizza), Twister Tacos, and Why Not Sandwich Shop. A great quick lunch option on the mountain or a convenient dinner for nights you don't want to venture far.

Back Door Grill
Home of one of the top 10 burgers in America per multiple national rankings. A cherished Steamboat hangout since 2014. Fantastic burgers, great atmosphere, friendly staff that makes everyone feel like a regular.

O'Neil's Tavern & Grill
The cozy, welcoming spirit of an Irish pub right in downtown Steamboat. One of the few spots open late. Great for post-dinner drinks or a casual meal any night of the week. Friendly crowd, great energy, exactly what a good pub should be.
Old Town Pub & Restaurant
A Steamboat staple on Lincoln Ave. Great burgers, cold beer, and a lively unpretentious crowd. The kind of place where you can walk in after a long ski day in full gear and feel completely at home.
Table 79 Foodbar
Creative small plates and excellent craft cocktails in a lively downtown setting. Great happy hour. A sophisticated but casual spot, perfect for a pre-dinner drink and snacks or a relaxed late evening.
Hot Springs
Steamboat Springs was literally named for its natural hot springs. Soaking after a day on the mountain or trails is one of the great Steamboat traditions.
Strawberry Park Natural Hot Springs
One of the most beautiful hot springs experiences in Colorado. Natural rock pools in a stunning wooded canyon, fed directly from geothermal springs. Adults-only after dark. Reserve well in advance, especially for weekend evenings. Bring a towel and cash. This one is genuinely special and not to be missed.
Old Town Hot Springs
Right in downtown Steamboat on the Yampa River. Natural hot spring pools, waterslides, a lap pool, fitness center, and spa. The most convenient hot spring option, great for families and a wonderful recovery after a day on the mountain. Open daily.
Mineral Springs Walking Tour
Steamboat was named for a steam-like sound made by a natural spring along the Yampa River, now called the Steamboat Spring. A self-guided walking tour from downtown takes you through seven clusters of historic mineral springs, each with its own character. Iron Spring (where the town's founder settled), Soda Spring (carbonated, no sulfur), Heart Spring (102 degrees, still soakable at Old Town Hot Springs), and the original Steamboat Spring itself. In summer, free guided tours run Wednesdays 9–11am led by a Yampatika naturalist. Meet at the Art Depot, 1001 13th St. One of the most interesting and least-known things to do in Steamboat.
Hiking, Trails & Outdoors
Steamboat has beautiful trail systems in every direction. Keep in mind that all trails here involve elevation change, and the altitude affects effort more than you might expect. Start earlier than you think, bring more water than you think, and go at your own pace.
Local Walking Trails — Eagle Ridge & Base Area
The paths and trails immediately around the Terraces at Eagle Ridge and the base area are wonderful for a morning or evening walk. Beautiful mountain scenery, peaceful, and a great way to start or end your day without getting in a car. Locals walk these year-round. Lace up and explore right from your door.
Fish Creek Falls
The signature Steamboat hike. A stunning 283-foot waterfall with a short paved path to the lower viewing area that almost anyone can do. The upper trail toward Long Lake climbs significantly and has real elevation gain. A must-do in any season, including snowshoeing in winter, when the frozen falls are extraordinary.
Hike Up Under the Gondola
One of the best things you can do at Steamboat in summer. Hike up the trail under the gondola to Thunderhead, have a cold beer at the top at Hazie's while soaking in panoramic views of the Yampa Valley, then ride the gondola back down. No gondola ticket required for the hike up, and you can ride down on a ticket. An experience you'll talk about for years.
Emerald Mountain
A network of trails right in town. The Quarry Trail is a popular choice with good views of downtown Steamboat and the ski resort. Has real elevation gain. Also excellent for mountain biking. A local favorite year-round accessible from 13th Street.
Yampa River Core Trail
A 7.5-mile paved trail running along the Yampa River from the mountain base through downtown. Flat and accessible, wonderful for a morning walk, bike ride, or stroll through town. The most family-friendly trail option in Steamboat. Connects the mountain village to downtown easily.
Rabbit Ears Pass
A gorgeous scenic drive east on US-40 into Routt National Forest. The iconic Rabbit Ears rock formations sit above wildflower meadows that are spectacular in summer. Trails here involve real elevation at altitude, but even a walk to the viewpoints is worth the drive. A beautiful half-day outing.
Summer Activities & Attractions
Steamboat's summer is as special as its winter. The Yampa River, the Pro Rodeo, the farmers market, mountain biking, horseback riding, and more. There is genuinely no shortage of things to do when the snow melts.
Yampa River Tubing
Floating the Yampa River through downtown Steamboat is a quintessential summer experience. A beautiful float through the heart of town with the mountains in view. Check current river conditions and use a local outfitter for tubes and shuttle service. One of the best afternoons you'll have in Colorado.
Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series
A Steamboat tradition running for over 100 years. Every Friday and Saturday night in summer, world-class rodeo events at the Howelsen Hill rodeo grounds. Barrel racing, bull riding, and the full rodeo experience under the stars. A genuinely unique and thrilling Steamboat experience not to be missed.
Saddleback Ranch
Horseback rides through Colorado's elk and deer trails, wildflower meadows, and mountain scenery. A wonderful way to experience the landscape you've been looking at from the gondola. Available year-round, including winter sleigh rides and tubing that make it equally special in the snow.
Steamboat Resort Mountain Biking
When the ski lifts become bike lifts, Steamboat transforms into one of the best mountain biking destinations in Colorado. Trails for every skill level, rentals available at the base. Gondola access means you can go straight to the downhill runs.
Steamboat Springs Farmers Market
Every Saturday morning in summer on Lincoln Ave. Local produce, artisan foods, crafts, and the best people-watching in town. Live music most weekends. A wonderful way to start a Steamboat morning before a day on the mountain or the river.
Howelsen Hill & Ice Arena
Historic ski hill right in downtown Steamboat, the oldest operating ski area in the US and home to more Olympic athletes per capita than anywhere else in the country. Ice skating in winter, summer events year-round. A genuine piece of American sports history worth knowing about.
Shopping, Arts & Culture
Lincoln Avenue is the heart of Steamboat, a genuinely charming main street with independent boutiques, art galleries, a great bookstore, and local character you won't find at a chain. Worth an afternoon on its own.
Jace Romick Gallery
Stunning photography of Steamboat's landscapes, wildlife, and mountain life by local photographer Jace Romick, a former Olympic skier who grew up on a ranch here. His work appears throughout Steamboat. The beautiful Flat Tops photograph hanging in the queen bedroom at Whiskey Ridge is one of his. If you fall in love with it, the gallery is at 833 Lincoln Ave.
Wild Horse Gallery
A cherished Steamboat favorite for decades. Specializes in meaningful and timeless photography capturing the Yampa Valley and the American West. Local photographers Greg Albracht and Rod Hanna offer a window into the West that you can take home. Contemporary realism that feels authentic to this place.
Off the Beaten Path Bookstore & Café
One of the great independent bookstores in the Mountain West. Beautifully curated selection, wonderful coffee, and a warm community gathering-place energy that makes it impossible to leave quickly. A must-visit any time of year.
Lyon's Corner Drug & Soda Fountain
A Steamboat institution since 1956 and one of my favorites. An old-fashioned pharmacy and soda fountain right in the heart of downtown. Swivel stools, checkerboard floors, hand-dipped milkshakes, root beer floats, phosphates, and sundaes made right in front of you. Classic American lunch counter. The $1 kiddie ice cream cone is legendary among locals. A step back in time in the best possible way.
Steamboat Art Museum
A beautifully curated small museum celebrating the art and culture of the American West. Free to visit and worth a wander on an afternoon when you want something quiet and inspiring. Rotating exhibitions featuring local and regional artists.
Lincoln Ave Boutiques
Wandering Lincoln Ave is half the fun. Highlights include Wanderlust Boutique (635 Lincoln), Ruby Jane Boutique (525 Lincoln), Kali's Boutique (734 Lincoln), and Chrysalis (810 Lincoln). All locally owned, all worth a browse.
Grocery Shopping
Whiskey Ridge has a full kitchen and a double oven. Stocking up for a few nights in is a great option, especially after a long day on the mountain.
Safeway
The most convenient full-service grocery store to Whiskey Ridge. Everything you need for a full kitchen stay. Pro tip from Sandy: Safeway offers curbside pickup, which is incredibly convenient when arriving from the Hayden airport. Order ahead, time it to swing in on your way into Steamboat, and start your stay without a grocery run. A real time-saver on arrival day.
Steamboat Meat & Seafood Co.
The best butcher in Steamboat. Premium local and regional meats, fresh seafood, and house-made items. If you're planning a big dinner at the house, this is where to get your protein. A genuinely excellent local shop worth seeking out.
Wild Plum
Right around the corner from Whiskey Ridge. Great for organic produce, specialty items, prepared foods, wine and spirits, and anything you can't find at Safeway. Also wonderful for a glass of wine on the patio, a casual lunch, or fresh gelato and desserts to bring back to the house.
Walmart Supercenter
Great for inexpensive staples, gear, supplies, paper goods, and anything you forgot to pack. Keep in mind the Steamboat Walmart doesn't carry full produce or meat selections, so pair it with Safeway or the Meat and Seafood Co. for a complete shop.
Also worth knowing: Smell That Bread (135 11th St) for fresh-baked goods to fuel your ski morning right.
A Few Practical Tips
- Getting here — fly Hayden (HDN) — Fly into Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden, just 30 minutes from Steamboat. My favorite shuttle is Storm Mountain Express (stormmountainexpress.com), reliable and they know these roads. Uber is not always easy to get in Hayden, so plan ahead. Either rent a car or book a shuttle before you arrive. Don't assume an Uber will be waiting.
- Safeway curbside — a game-changer — Order your groceries ahead on the Safeway app and pick up curbside on your way in from the airport. You arrive at Whiskey Ridge ready to cook. One of the best arrival tips I can give.
- The free city bus (SST) — Steamboat Springs Transit runs free buses connecting the mountain village to downtown all day. Real-time tracking via the RouteShout app. You genuinely don't need a car for most of your stay. steamboatsprings.net/transit
- A note on location — Whiskey Ridge is within easy walking distance of the gondola base, but is not ski-in/ski-out. The gondola is about a 10-minute walk. The Retreatia shuttle also runs a loop from the garage entrance during ski season. This is a genuinely excellent location, just set expectations correctly.
- Bears and elk are real here — Never leave food, trash, or anything scented outside or in an unlocked car. If you encounter a bear, stay calm and back away slowly. Give elk a wide berth, especially cows with calves in spring and bulls in the fall rut. Enjoy them from a distance.
- The altitude is real — Steamboat sits at around 6,700 feet at base, and the trails climb from there. Stay hydrated, go slower than you think you need to, and give yourself a day to acclimate before attempting anything strenuous. Colorado is not forgiving to overconfident visitors.
- Strawberry Hot Springs — reserve ahead — One of the best experiences in the area and it books up fast, especially weekend evenings. Reserve online well in advance at strawberryhotsprings.com. Worth the extra planning.
- Hazie's — make a reservation — Dinner at the top of the gondola is one of the great Steamboat experiences, but spots fill up. Book ahead at steamboat.com before you arrive.
- The gondola hike — do this in summer — Hike up the trail under the gondola to Thunderhead, have a cold beer at Hazie's while taking in the panoramic Yampa Valley views, then ride the gondola back down. No ticket needed for the hike up. One of the best afternoons Steamboat offers.
- That Flat Tops photograph in the queen bedroom — It's a Jace Romick. His gallery is at 833 Lincoln Ave if you want to take the mountains home with you.
- Creekside Cafe — arrive early — The best breakfast in Steamboat fills up fast on weekends. A creekside patio table on a sunny morning is one of the best ways to start a Steamboat day. Worth the wait.
- Windows — Crank-out style. Levers in the center need to be up on both top and bottom before cranking. Close at night in freezing temps to protect the pipes, and close and lock before checkout.
- The Sonos Move speaker — Connect via the Sonos app or Bluetooth. Portable, take it anywhere in the unit or out on the balcony. Perfect for a fireside evening after skiing.
